Welcome Lady Runners,
Are you ready to lace up your sneakers, hit the pavement, track or treadmill, and embark on a journey of epic proportions? Well, buckle up, because you’re about to dive headfirst into the wonderfully chaotic world of women’s running.
Picture this: You, clad in your finest active wear (which may or may not have been lurking in the back of your closet since the dawn of time), standing on the treadmill or on the sidewalk, heart pounding with equal parts excitement and sheer terror. It’s like the Olympics, except with more sweat and significantly fewer spectators. At least for now…
The Great Outdoors it is!
I personally would rather run outside (way more excitement going on) then run on a treadmill if I can help it. You encounter a whole cast of characters along the way. The seasonal marathoner that breezes by you like a gazelle. Then there are the dog walkers with their dog wanting to join you on your run or nibble at your ankles. Of course we are all doing this for the elusive “runners high” that everyone keeps talking about. I’m pretty sure this is an urban legend. And of course let’s not forget Mother Nature herself. The bitch does have a mind of her own. Watch out for those uneven sidewalks! Our tax dollars hard at work. Every outdoor run is a high-stakes adventure worthy of its own survival guide.
Ode to the Sports Bra
Now, before you take off like a bat out of hell, let’s address the elephant in the room: sports bras. Oh yes, the unsung heroes of the running world. They’re like tiny, elasticized fortresses, valiantly attempting to corral the girls into submission as you bounce your way down the trail. Finding the perfect sports bra is a quest worthy of its own epic ballad, complete with triumphs, tragedies, and a fair amount of underwire-induced bruising.
Slower Then #$@k
I’m starting to accept the fact that I’m just not a fast runner. My times aren’t the worst, but their nothing to brag about either. The great thing about running is it’s your own sport. You vs. You. Especially when you first start out running. You can’t compare yourself to anyone else. Now, this doesn’t mean you cannot better your pace, stride and build a higher VO2 max. All I’m saying is give yourself some time to get better. Like everything else, the more you run, and are consistent about it the better of a runner you will be.
“Why did I think this was a good idea again?”
There’s a sense of exhilaration unlike anything else. The rhythm of your footsteps becomes a heartbeat, pounding out a primal rhythm that connects you to something greater then yourself.
The road ahead may be long and paved with uncertainty, but with a killer playlist, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
You are a runner, hear you roar! Or wheeze, depending on your current level of cardio fitness. There is nothing easy at all about running. But that’s what makes it so damn special. If it were easy ladies everyone would be doing it. Remember that.
Choose your hard.
I choose to run.
Until next time,
Happy running!
